INSTRUCTOR
Augusta Rose Photography

Meghan Carmichael is a dance artist

based on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Born and raised in Sandwich MA, I began my dance studies on the Cape and throughout New England. I received my BFA in Contemporary Dance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 2012. My career has brought me to New York City, New England, California, and Europe. I am currently a company member with Ali Kenner Brodsky & co. I am also founder and artistic director of Near & Far: Collaborative Art Project.

As a teacher, I have been on faculty at Festival Ballet Providence (FBP), Providence Ballet Theater, Cape Cod Dance Center, and an adjunct at Brown University and Dean College. I developed the "Dance in the Community" program at the Moses Brown School, where I mentored high school students while teaching diverse communities through physically inclusive dance.

My class structure integrates rigorous physical studio practice based in traditional American Modern/Contemporary dance techniques (Cunningham, Limon, and Nikolais/Lewis), somatic principles, Safety-Release technique, and CONTINUUM technique, while also proposing investigative methods from Forsythe movement modalities, Gaga technique, Nancy Stark Smith’s contact improv “underscore” principles, mindfulness meditation, and reiki. In addition, I have studied with AXIS Dance Company, in Oakland CA, about their physically integrated, physically inclusive dance practices. I have been dedicating my dance practice to accessibility, working with each individual to help each of us feel safe as we engage in our bodies to explore these principles.

As a freelance dance artist, I wear many hats: performer, choreographer, teacher, social media marketing and website design consultant, blogger, and community organizer, all while balancing various odd jobs one must take in order to make a living in this field. In addition, I have also experienced injuries and major health setbacks that have deeply informed my practice. As a result, injury prevention and rehabilitation are central to my teaching. I approach technique, performance, and choreography as spaces where we can experience and get to know our body's capacity and range with joy, curiosity, and compassion.

All this to say... this is my life's work. I'm am honored to share the gift of dance with you!

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Studio practice is a sacred place to explore our physicality and artistry, questions and musings.

It's a place to develop a deeper awareness of ourselves and connect with each other through movement, music, and fellowship.

I invite you to join me in the vibrant exploration that is a shared dance practice;

in a safe, compassionate, non - competitive, non - judgemental environment.

I invite you to take this opportunity for breath, presence,

and engagement with your fellow humans and surroundings.

In the studio laboratory, let's challenge our assumptions,

take nothing for granted,

experiment with structure and freedom,

and thoroughly enjoy the process of learning movement.
